The original Twisted Metal is the first Playstation game I ever played. Since then I’ve dabbled in them all but never found much enjoyment since the second installment. Probably because I didn’t actually own the games and had to play them at friends.

It wasn’t a year ago that I was hanging out with my wife and Chris (aka “superuntouchable”) and said “Man,
when are they going to make a new Twisted Metal?” When E3 came around and I saw the early footage of this game I was almost dancing around my living room in excitement.

So what do we know about the newest installment of Twisted Metal? Well we know it’s spokesperson Sweet Tooth is back, which we could only assume seeing as how he’s been the front man for the entire series. We also know that the format has changed a bit. Where as, before, we use to pick a character, and thus a car, and play through the story mode as such. In this game we not only see photos of Sweet Tooth in his Ice Cream truck but we also see him in Axle’s two wheel contraption, on Grimms motorcycle andd many others.

Confirmed Characters

As of now there’s not a whole lot of information surrounding the characters that we’ll be able to choose but we know at least 4 so far.

Dollface

During an interview with David Jaffe, he gave info that Dollface’s new story is that she is a model who is obsessed with her beauty.

Sweet Tooth

His name remains the same, and his story is based on the origin of the character, such as how he got the mask. But in the new Twisted Metal it is confirmed he makes it himself, rather than someone else creating it. The story also focuses on his first kill, and possibly his childhood.

In the PlayStation Magazine article, David Jaffe said his story is about Sweet Tooth searching for “the one that got away” , who was the first girl he failed to kill. Jaffe stated that the cutscenes are pretty disturbing for Sweet Tooth’s story, and there are 3 endings, one for each difficulty level played.

Mr. Grimm

In previous iterations Mr. Grimm was the ACTUAL Grim Reaper. Mr. Grimm is set to appear in the upcoming Twisted Metal as the leader of his own faction, The Skulls. He is also 1 of only 3 story mode characters. Unlike the other games, this version of Mr. Grimm is a African-American stuntman who is trying to gain his dead father’s approval.

The Preacher

The Preacher has been confirmed for Twisted Metal 2011, but it is unknown if he will drive Brimstone. The preacher as he appears in Twisted Metal 2011

His team is called The Preachers. In a Twisted Metal trailer, it shows that his objective is to “tear down [Calypso's] tower of sin”, the tower of sin referring to the Calypso Industries HQ.

Game Modes

As we can see when we read the character information, there will be a story mode. So far there are only 4 confirmed characters, however, with a release date of October4th of 2011, we have plenty of time for them to surprise us with some new characters.

There will also be online multiplayer maps. Most of them are going to work like you’re use to seeing FPS multiplayer games. There’s Capture the Flag, Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch and so on. According to an interview Jaffe did with IGN, we will be seeing mostly these types of gametypes. However, they are adding a new mode called “Nuke” where the objective is to defend or destroy a statue that represents the team you’re playing on.
